City Art in Lisbon - the statue commemorating Portugal's 1975 Revolution in Eduardo VII Park

Our City Art Gallery is located just a few minutes away from one of the famous viewpoints of Lisbon at the top of Eduardo VII Park.

On top of the breathtaking view, there is a sculpture commemorating Portugal's 1975 Revolution.

Honouring the peaceful “Carnation Revolution”, which ended nearly 50 years of dictatorship and brought democracy to Portugal, this sculpture is a tribute to the courage and unity of the Portuguese people. It was created by the Portuguese sculptor João Cutileiro, known for his modern and expressive works.

The sculpture was somewhat controversial. Critics argued that the abstract and modern style of the monument did not adequately capture the significance or spirit of the revolution. Some felt that the fragmented human forms used in the sculpture were too ambiguous and failed to provide a clear representation of the historical event. Despite this, the work remains a notable tribute to the revolution, symbolizing both freedom and the complexities of Portugal’s political history.

As you stroll through this iconic park, take a moment to reflect on the resilience that reshaped Portugal’s history.
